ABHMS’ Latino Ministries to Co-Sponsor Monthly Online Workshops; Racism Theme Planned for Sept. 25

As the first of their new monthly “Conversaciones Latinas Contemporáneas” (“Contemporary Latino Conversations”), American Baptist Home Mission Societies’ (ABHMS) Latino Ministries and the Hispanic National Caucus will offer the “Naked Inequality: Racism from a Latino Perspective” online workshop at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Sept. 25.

“The polarization experienced in our communities, and even in our congregations, is an urgent call to create safe spaces for dialogue where love and respect should be the starting point to talk to each other,” says the Rev. Salvador Orellana, ABHMS’ director of Intercultural Ministries.

Former American Baptist Churches General Secretary Daniel E. Weiss Remembered

Rev. Dr. Daniel E. Weiss, who served as General Secretary of American Baptist Churches USA from 1988 to 2000, died on Saturday, August 22. Prior to serving as General Secretary, Dr. Weiss was Executive Director of the American Baptist Churches USA Board of Educational Ministries from 1983-1988, and previously served as president of American Baptist-related schools, Eastern College in St. Davids, Pa., and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, from 1973-1981.

In the midst of these intense realities, we often carry heavy burdens in our bodies, minds, and hearts. It can get pretty messy if we are not self-aware of how this impacts our bodies, hearts, and relationships. I have found that it is important to quiet our hearts long enough to listen to our tumultuous emotions. Our emotions connect our inner world to the ups and downs of life. Often the connection is more than we can bear. Yet, I believe it is critical that we listen to and ponder what we feel so that we may be able to be moved to the far deeper issue of what our hearts are doing with God and others. Our emotions link our internal and external worlds. And if we neglect to attend to our feelings, it can leave us feeling desolate and distant from God and others.
