Day 17 Servant Leadership

Scripture:

Mark 10:43–45 – “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant...”

Reflection:

In Mark 10:43-45, we find Jesus having a conversation with the disciples about leadership. In this discourse, Jesus redefines true leadership. He teaches us that true leadership isn’t about lording power over others but about serving others and meeting their needs. 

Furthermore, we’re called to have a heart of sacrifice, as Jesus illustrated throughout His ministry. Jesus is the model for how we’re to serve, as He reminds us in Mark 10:45. He says, “… the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

As leaders, the question we should ask ourselves is, “Does our serving match how Jesus served?” Are we feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting the incarcerated? Ultimately, are we loving one another and others as Jesus did? If so, we are exemplifying what a true leader is. A true leader is a servant. God bless you!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you came not to be served but to serve. Shape our leadership in Your image. Free us from the desire for recognition, status, or control, and give us hearts attuned to others' needs. May our leadership be marked by humility, compassion, sacrifice, and a willingness to serve wherever You call us. Amen.

Practice: Look beyond your usual responsibilities to notice someone whose needs might be overlooked. Find one practical way to serve that person without seeking attention or recognition. At the end of the day, reflect on what that experience taught you about the servant leadership of Jesus.
