Churches Are Asked to Promote The Reorganization Survey Print E-mail
Written by ABCNJ Office
Thursday, 11 March 2010 20:27

To help inform and obtain essential information regarding the proposed Region Reorganization Proposal, we have created two inserts that you can include in your churches publications and bulletins.  It is so important that all of our ABCNJ churches become involved in passing along this information and ask there members to take the online survey.  This connection will help everyone of our churches express their questions, share their support, and give direction to our future ministry with New Jersey.

ABCNJ Public Mission Grant: English in the Workplace

Call for Applications from ABCNJ Churches

The Public Mission Committee of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey have received a Palmer grant in order to enhance the instruction and opportunities for language minority individuals living in New Jersey.  The proposed project will focus on preparing adults for the workplace by providing instruction and exposure to language that will be encountered in the workplace.  We seek to launch two to three English for the Workplace classes in 2010, serving a maximum of 60 adult students per semester (120 per year).  If the Pilot Project is successful and future funding is secured, we hope to expand the project to at least 5-6 sites across the state by 2011, which would enable us to serve 120 adult students per semester (240 annually).

ABCNJ Churches in covenant with the region are encouraged to apply for a grant.  Applications should be on church letterhead and be one page in length.  The letter should briefly describe the aims of your ESL ministry, key people who will be involved in the ministry and a budget outline.  The application is due by May 5, 2010.

Columbus Baptist Church - Testimonies for Christ Print E-mail
Written by Rev. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, ABCNJ Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor
Sunday, 07 March 2010 19:05
altI always look forward to worshipping and preaching at Columbus Baptist Church (Senior Pastor Rev. John Grove)!  The praise team (which was featured at the 2009 ABCNJ Annual Session) led a worship time which culminated in our taking of the Lord's Supper (yes, before the sermon!).  Pastor Grove's "2-minute video sermon" was great - and very professionally packaged.

In between communion and my message, Rev. Grove reminded the church that he had asked them to share Christ with at least one person during the week, and then he invited people to share how they had done so and what were the results.  A number of women and men recounted how they had seized upon opportunities to share the Gospel with co-workers, strangers, customers and business people.  One woman shared how the person she talked to actually accepted Christ on the spot!

How great it is to see a church where members put their faith into practice throughout the week!

Ledgewood Baptist's Witness: "God is Love" Print E-mail

We have had to post a lot of sad news in the past two months (such as the disasters in Haiti and Chile), and the 3 large snowstorms we have endured here in New Jersey have also sapped the spirits of some.  But let us not lose hope or a positive attitude; God is in control and spring is coming!

This past Sunday, I preached at Ledgewood Baptist Church.  Between services, the youth created this snowy witness for all to see.  Thanks to Pastor David Holwick for the shot.

Commissioned Missionary Kristy Engel at the Forefront of International Ministries/ABCUSA Mercy Missions

(Note from Rev. Dr. Elmo Familiaran: Word has gotten to us from Kristy Engel that the URL recorded in an earlier posting of this article has been taken down due to copyright issues. Some of you have also contacted us in the region office to report the same. We apologize for the inconvenience and Kristy has now posted a new video report and that update URL is the one indicated below. Please let us know if you still encounter problems).

Here is a link to a brief photo montage of what American Baptists are doing in the ongoing emergency in Haiti. Please share it with your congregations so that you will have a first-hand account of how American Baptists are participating in the ministry of compassion through our missionaries and mission teams, and see where your generous financial support continues to heal and mend people's lives. Kristy Engel is a Registered Nurse, and a commissioned missionary of Internaitonal Ministries/ABCUSA, serving at the Good Samaritan Hospital in the Dominican Republic and our Baptist partners there.

The Good Samaritan Hospital in the DR has been serving as the main staging area for all American Baptist medical mission teams. Kristy is leading an average of one team per week to serve in Port au Prince on weekly shifts. It is through your financial support that this has been made possible!

You will see on the photo montage the devastation in Haiti that defies description, juxtaposed with the faces of people and children through whom we still see God's hope. You will also see the clinic where Kristy and American Baptist medical teams are operating in Port au Prince.

The health and reconstruction needs in Haiti will extend far beyond into the future. Our Baptist partners there desperately need our assistance. Are you interested to volunteer some of your time and skill and participate in future mission teams to Haiti? Fill out a volunteer enlistment form on the ABCNJ website, or call the region office at (609) 587-8700.

Christ Congregation Princeton Honors Beverly and Tom McNally and Other Members Print E-mail
Written by Rev. William Gaventa
Tuesday, 02 March 2010 03:26

altDr. Spitzer's Note:  Beverly and Tom have served ABCNj and ABCUSA in numerous capacities.  ABCNJ's Public Mission Committee encourages all of our churches to support the Penny Project.

On Sunday, February 28, the Sunday morning service at Christ Congregation included a Children’s Sermon focused on the ways that love, in little steps over the long haul, is a reflection of God’s enormous love and commitment to us. It was also a way of recognizing and honoring Beverly and Tom McNally, who celebrated their 50th Anniversary in December, Carol and Charles McCollough (50th last June), and Priscilla Brown, who was married to her husband Bob for 59 years before his death in 2008.

In the Children’s Sermon, each child was asked about how long they had been loved (i.e., their age) and then held up a piece of paper with the number. In our small congregation, we were hoping to get to 50 or more, and sure enough, we got to 56. Then the McNallys, McColloughs and Priscilla Brown were invited up as examples of people who had worked hard to love “over the long haul,” as God loves us.

In the fall, Beverly McNally had done a Children’s Sermon on behalf of the Social Action Committee of Christ Congregation, initiating our involvement in The Penny Project, an American Baptist Churches in the USA project originating in New Hampshire by the commitment of some children to start contributing pennies to help other children in need.  Beverly was back in church today after several weeks in the hospital due to her ongoing battle with cancer.  We had hoped to do this on Valentine’s Day, but postponed it until today for that reason.

So today, in the surprise ending to the Children’s Sermon, all the children, along with all the other members of the congregation, had been invited to bring 50 or more coins to our big Penny Project jar, simply to note that love, over time, is step by step, penny by penny, act by act.  We did not quite fill up the jar (it’s a big one!) but it went up a number of inches.

The children of the church will be consulted in the ways that these funds should be distributed to help children in our communities.

It was a great morning, and it is a great project. Christ Congregation urges you to join in.
