Reflection:
In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, the Apostle Paul charges us to “encourage one another and build each other up.”

Architects often marvel at the ancient Roman arch. Its strength does not come from a single stone but from how individual stones lean into one another, distributing weight to a shared foundation. If one stone shifts or pulls away, the entire structure threatens to collapse.

In our shared ABCNJ ministry, we are those stones. The real-world weight of pastoral burnout, declining attendance, and community anxiety can make us want to pull inward. Yet true Christ-centered encouragement demands the exact opposite. It requires us to lean into one another, bearing the load together.

Here is our challenge: Encouragement is not passive kindness. It is active, messy, and intentional construction work. It means calling a neighboring ABCNJ pastor just to listen. It means celebrating another church's victory even when your own congregation is struggling.

If we focus only on building our own separate walls, we miss the grander sanctuary God is shaping. Let us commit to the hard work of leaning in. Who will you intentionally build up and support this week to strengthen our shared foundation in Christ?

Prayer : Gracious God, thank You for those You have placed beside us in ministry. Teach us to speak words that strengthen, to listen with compassion, and to celebrate others' work. Guard us against discouragement, comparison, and isolation. Make us faithful encouragers who reflect hope and help one another persevere with joy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Practice: I ntentionally encourage someone serving in ministry this week. Send a note, make a phone call, or pray with them in person. Let them know one specific way you see God working through their life and ministry and ask nothing in return.

Reflection:
“Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In ministry, worries can quietly stack up—concerns for our congregations, families, communities, and our own weary souls. Paul does not deny these burdens; instead, he invites us to carry them differently. “In everything,” he says, “bring them to God.” Prayer is not an added task on our list of responsibilities; it is the gracious gift through which Christ roots us again in His presence and strength.

As pastors, leaders, and congregations across ABCNJ, especially in our Haitian congregations, we share many of the same anxieties: changing neighborhoods, limited resources, uncertain futures. Yet in prayer, we discover that we do not stand in these places alone. The Spirit meets us where we are, gathers our scattered thoughts, and replaces restless striving with a guarding peace.

Today, let us receive prayer as a gift, not an obligation—an open door into the heart of Christ. As we turn our worries into prayers, may God renew our trust, deepen our roots in Jesus, and prepare us, together, for the work and hope that lie ahead.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for the gift of prayer and the assurance that we can bring all things before You. When worries overwhelm us, turn our anxious thoughts toward Your presence. Teach us to trust You with our congregations, communities, families, and ourselves. Guard our hearts and minds with the peace that only Christ can give. Amen.

Practice: Write down three concerns weighing on your heart today. Spend a few moments praying specifically about each one, then name something you are grateful for. Throughout the day, whenever one of those worries returns, intentionally turn it into prayer.

Day 10 Renewing the Mind

Romans 12:2 — "Be transformed by the renewing of your minds…"

Reflection:

Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” This powerful passage is one we need to believe and practice. My wife is a middle school special education math teacher, and she keeps a Rubik’s Cube on her desk. Her students love to try to stump her, but no matter how much they scramble it, she always finds a way to solve it. Our 7-year-old has picked up on this trend and has practiced solving it and creating fun patterns. I saw what my 7-year-old did and BELIEVED I could do it, but I was wrong. So, with lots of help from YouTube and plenty of practice, I have slowly figured out different patterns and solutions. I still haven't mastered the art of solving the puzzle, but I am better than I once was.

As Paul writes, we need to practice renewing our minds to be transformed. We might see others who are transformed and believe we can be transformed as well. But we need to put this belief into practice through a daily pursuit of renewing our minds and being rooted in Christ. So day after day, we become a living sacrifice as we set our minds on Christ, on his mercy, his grace, and his goodness.

Prayer
Transforming God, renew our minds and root our thoughts in Christ. Help us resist the patterns that draw us away from You and focus daily on Your mercy, grace, and goodness. Shape our hearts and minds so we may discern Your will and live faithfully for You. Amen.

Practice
Choose one thought or habit that needs renewal. Each time it surfaces this week, pause and replace it with a truth from Scripture. Ask God to reshape your thinking and help you practice the way of Christ daily.

Day 9 A New Thing

Scripture: Isaiah 43:18–19 — "I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?"

Reflection:
Isaiah 43:18–19 reminds us not to remain trapped in the past because God is doing something new. Galatians 6:2–5 teaches that Christian community helps people move forward by carrying their overwhelming burdens and by encouraging them to take responsibility for their own lives.

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” —Isaiah

43:19. Sometimes yesterday’s pain becomes today’s burden. Failure, grief, disappointment, or regret can feel like a heavy boulder we cannot carry alone. Yet God tells us, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.” This does not mean pretending our pain never happened. It means refusing to let the past control our future.

God often does His new work through His people. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” When someone is overwhelmed, we walk alongside them with prayer, compassion, and practical support.

However, bearing someone’s burden does not mean shouldering every responsibility for them. God may use today’s responsibilities—our “backpacks”—to strengthen our faith and shape our character.

Perhaps you feel trapped in a wilderness today. Bring your burden to Jesus and let others support you. Then take the next faithful step. God is making a way through the wilderness, and He may use His church to help you see it.

Prayer : God of new beginnings, help us release what belongs to the past and recognize the new thing You are doing among us. Grant us grace to carry one another’s burdens without losing sight of our own responsibilities. When the path ahead seems uncertain, strengthen our faith to trust in Your presence and take the next faithful step. Amen.

Practice : Consider one area of your life or ministry where you may be clinging to the past. Bring it before God in prayer and identify one step that moves you forward. Invite a trusted person to pray with you as you take that step.

Day 8 Abide in the Vine

Scripture: John 15:4–5 — " No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Reflection:
A friend of mine recently became a master gardener. He told me that the biggest lesson he learned from his experience is how important soil is to a thriving plant. What you plant in makes a huge difference.

I have been thinking a lot about what he said in relation to the parable Jesus told in John 15 about the vine and the branches. If the fruit is the product of the vine, then the vine is the product of the soil.

Perhaps it is like this. Jesus is the vine, and this vine is planted in the soil, which is the nature and character of God. The “nutrients” that make up this soil (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; see Galatians 5) will flow up and out through Jesus and into me... IF I stay connected to the vine.

Dallas Willard wrote, “It is possible to become so obsessed with doing what Jesus says that you fail to become the kind of person Jesus wants.” I don’t need to do more. I need the fruits of the Spirit. If I stay in the vine, the “nutrients” that comprise the soil of God’s character will naturally find their way into, and out of, me.

Prayer : Lord Jesus, keep us deeply rooted and abiding in You. When we are tempted to measure faithfulness by our accomplishments, remind us that lasting fruit grows from life with You. Nourish us by Your Spirit and cultivate in us love, joy, peace, patience, and grace. May our lives bear fruit that reflects Your character. Amen.

Practice : Set aside ten quiet minutes today to simply be with Christ. Read John 15:4–5 slowly, then sit in silence without a list of requests or tasks. Ask God to reveal which fruit of the Spirit He desires to cultivate more deeply in your life.

Reflection

Jesus' invitation to His disciples is both gracious and necessary: "Come away...and get some rest." After a season of ministry and service, He knew they needed time to step back, breathe deeply, and be renewed in God's presence. Sabbath is not simply about stopping our work; it is about remembering who God is and who we are. It is an act of trust that acknowledges the world does not depend solely on our efforts and that God remains faithfully at work even when we are still.

We often struggle to accept this invitation. There is always another meeting, another ministry need, or another task waiting to be completed. Yet the pattern of Scripture reminds us that rest is not a sign of weakness but a gift of grace. Even Jesus regularly withdrew to pray and be refreshed by the Father.

Today, we are reminded that faithful ministry is sustained not by endless striving but by abiding in God's presence. Across generations, God's people have discovered that renewal comes when we trust God enough to rest. On the Sabbath, we are restored, and in that restoration, we are strengthened to continue God's work with joy.

Prayer

Gracious God, quiet my restless heart and teach me to receive the gift of Sabbath. Restore my soul, renew my strength, and help me trust that your grace is sufficient for every task. May I find peace and renewal in your presence. Amen.

Practice

Set aside intentional time today for quiet, prayer, or simple rest. Turn away from distractions and receive God's gift of renewal with gratitude.

Reflection

Foundations are rarely noticed until they are tested. A building may look strong and beautiful, but without a solid foundation, it cannot withstand storms or the passage of time. Paul reminds the church that only one foundation can sustain the people of God: Jesus Christ. Programs, traditions, and personalities all have value, but they are not the source of our strength. Christ alone is the cornerstone on which the church is built.

Through the changing seasons, the church has faced challenges, transitions, and new opportunities for ministry. Congregations have adapted to evolving communities, embraced new generations of leaders, and found creative ways to share the gospel. Yet through it all, faithful disciples have understood that lasting ministry is never built on human effort alone. It is rooted in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As we gather for the Annual Session, we are invited to reflect on the foundations of our lives and ministries. What anchors us when uncertainty arises? What gives us courage when the future seems unclear? When Christ is our foundation, we can move forward with confidence, trusting that God's love and faithfulness will sustain and guide us in the work ahead.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the cornerstone of the Church and the foundation of my life. Keep me grounded in your truth and anchored in your love. Help me to build faithfully on what endures and trust you with all that lies ahead. Amen.

Reflection

Thanksgiving is more than a response to blessings received; it is a way of seeing the world through the eyes of faith. Gratitude reminds us that God is present and active, even in seasons when challenges seem to overshadow joy. The apostle Paul encourages believers to be rooted in Christ and overflowing with thanksgiving because a grateful heart remembers that every good and perfect gift comes from God.

For those engaged in ministry, it can be easy to become focused on unfinished work, unanswered prayers, or the needs that remain around us. Yet gratitude invites us to pause and remember how God has already been at work. We give thanks for lives transformed by the gospel, for congregations that continue to serve faithfully, and for the countless acts of kindness and generosity that often go unnoticed yet reflect the love of Christ.

As we prepare for the Annual Session, gratitude grounds us in hope. We remember the rich legacy of ministry entrusted to us and celebrate the many ways God continues to work through churches and leaders throughout ABCNJ. The God who has been faithful in the past remains faithful today and will continue to guide us into the future.

Generous God, open my eyes to the many signs of your goodness and grace. Fill my heart with gratitude for your faithfulness, and help me share that spirit of thankfulness with everyone I meet. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reflection

The Christian journey is never walked alone. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses—faithful women and men who have gone before us and whose lives continue to encourage and inspire us. Some are remembered through stories and photographs, while others served quietly and faithfully, known only to those whose lives they touched. They taught children, visited the sick, welcomed strangers, sang in choirs, prayed faithfully, and served the church with joy.

As we remember God's faithfulness, we also give thanks for those whose witness has shaped our own faith. Each congregation carries stories of pastors, lay leaders, deacons, missionaries, and everyday disciples who invested in others and trusted God with the future. Their lives remind us that ministry is often built through small acts of love repeated over time.

Remembering the saints is not about longing for the past. It is about recognizing that we are part of a much larger story that God continues to write. The same God who called and sustained those who came before us now calls us to live with courage, generosity, and hope, so that future generations will know the goodness and faithfulness of God.

Prayer

God of every generation, we thank you for the faithful witnesses who have gone before us. May their example inspire us to live with courage and grace, and may our lives become a blessing to those who will follow. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reflection

In a culture that often measures success by numbers, accomplishments, and visible results, Paul's words offer a much-needed reminder: the work of transformation belongs to God. We are called to be faithful, not to control the outcome. Some of us are called to plant seeds of faith through preaching, teaching, hospitality, or acts of compassion. Others are called to water those seeds by encouraging, mentoring, listening, and walking alongside others. Yet the miracle of growth—the changing of hearts and the building of God's kingdom—is always the work of the Holy Spirit.

Across generations, faithful servants have embraced this truth. Many have given themselves to the quiet, unseen work of ministry without knowing how God would use their efforts. They taught children, visited neighbors, prepared meals, offered prayers, and cared for those in need. The fruit of their labor often blossomed long after the work was done.

As we prepare to gather as the ABCNJ family, we are reminded that we stand within that same stream of faithfulness. God does not ask us to carry the burden of success; God asks us to be faithful stewards of the gifts we have been given. The One who called us is the One who will bring the growth.

Prayer

Gracious God, help me to serve with faithfulness and trust. Free me from the need to measure success by what I can see and teach me to believe you are always at work. Give me patience, hope, and confidence in Your perfect timing. Amen.

Reflection

Strong trees endure because their roots run deep. Hidden beneath the surface, they draw nourishment, provide stability, and sustain life through the seasons. Paul uses this image to remind believers that our lives and ministries are sustained not by activity alone but by a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.

The demands of leadership and everyday life can easily draw our attention away from the source of our strength. There are sermons to prepare, meetings to attend, ministries to lead, and needs to address. Yet before Jesus sent His disciples into the world, He invited them to be with Him. Prayer, worship, Scripture, and quiet trust are not distractions from ministry—they are the foundation of faithful ministry.

As we gather as the ABCNJ family, we give thanks for generations of faithful believers who remained anchored in Christ through both times of challenge and times of blessing. Their witness reminds us that the church is sustained not by human effort alone but by the grace and faithfulness of God.

Today, we are invited to tend the roots of our spiritual lives. When we remain rooted in Christ, we are strengthened for the work before us, encouraged by God's presence, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to rise together in hope.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, deepen my roots in you and draw me close to your heart. Quiet the distractions that pull me away and renew my spirit by your Word and your presence. Build my life on your love so I may remain steadfast and faithful in every season. Amen.

Day 1 – Called Together

Reflection

The story of God's people has always been one of community. From Abraham and Sarah's call to the birth of the early church, God has gathered people for a shared mission. Moses relied on elders. Jesus called disciples. The first believers prayed, worshiped, and served side by side. God's work has never depended on a single individual but on a faithful community responding together to God's call.

The apostle Paul reminds the church in Corinth that we are "God's servants, working together." Each of us brings unique gifts and experiences. Some plant, others water, some teach, some encourage, some lead, and some faithfully serve behind the scenes. Yet all are participating in the same work, and all depend on God, who gives the growth.

As we prepare for the Annual Session of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, we remember the rich heritage of faith entrusted to us. Across generations, pastors, lay leaders, congregations, and communities have joined together to proclaim the gospel and bear witness to the love of Christ. We are the beneficiaries of their faithfulness and the stewards of that mission today.

May we embrace our calling with gratitude, humility, and hope, knowing that this is God's work and that, by grace, we are invited to do it together.

Faithful God, thank You for calling us into the fellowship of your Church and into the joy of serving together. Unite us in love, humility, and a shared purpose. Welcoming New Leaders into ABCNJ Life

One of the greatest joys of regional ministry is welcoming new pastors and ministry leaders to the life of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey. Each new relationship strengthens our shared witness and reminds us that ministry is never meant to be lived in isolation—it is lived in community.

On Tuesday, June 23, new pastors, ordination candidates, and ministry leaders and staff gathered at the ABCNJ Center for Intro to ABCNJ Life, a morning designed to introduce them to the people, ministries, and relationships that define our Region.

More than an orientation, the gathering was an invitation to join a covenant community. Together, we explored what it means to be Rooted in Christ, Mission, and Love—the foundation upon which ABCNJ seeks to encourage, equip, and strengthen churches and their leaders across New Jersey.

Throughout the morning, participants met our regional staff and learned how each ministry contributes to ABCNJ's broader mission. Presentations covered Latino and Haitian ministries, transitional ministry, clergy and congregational support, and stewardship resources. Each presentation conveyed a common message: while each staff member serves in a unique area of ministry, we work together as one team in partnership with our churches.

A special thanks to our partners at MMBB Financial Services. Mr. Alex Kim, Financial Planning Specialist, shared valuable resources for clergy and congregations, reminding us that faithful ministry includes caring for the financial well-being of those who serve God's people.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the morning, however, was not in a presentation or a slide deck. It was around the breakfast tables, in conversations during breaks, over lunch, and in the stories participants shared with one another. New friendships were formed, experiences were exchanged, and connections began to grow. Those moments of fellowship are at the heart of who we are as American Baptists.

I often remind our churches that the strength of ABCNJ lies not in our programs alone but in our relationships. We are a covenant family that prays, learns, serves, and walks alongside one another through every season of ministry. Turning Toward Life Together: An Easter Witness

Dear Beloved Pastors, Leaders, and People of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey,

Grace and resurrection peace to you in the name of our risen Lord.

On this Easter morning, the question spoken at the empty tomb echoes into our lives: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen.” (Luke 24:5-6)

It is a question that does more than announce resurrection; it calls us to examine where we have been looking for life.

Throughout this Lenten season, we have journeyed together under the theme Turning Toward Life—a journey of repentance, renewal, and recommitment. Week by week, we have been called to turn: to begin again in grace, to trust God more deeply, to seek reconciliation, to pursue justice, to embrace the way of the cross, and to hope for new life even when the journey felt uncertain.

Now, on this Easter morning, we proclaim with bold faith that every faithful turn has led us here:

To the empty tomb.

To the Risen Christ.

To life that cannot be overcome.

The women arrived at the tomb expecting death, bringing spices for what had once been there. However, they found something entirely new—life where they thought there was none. The question remains, and still confronts us today, “Why do we look for the living among the dead?” Why do we search among things that cannot give us life?

The resurrection is more than comfort—it is a declaration! The resurrection declares that the forces which diminish life—fear, injustice, violence, division, and even death—do not have the final word. God does! The One who called us to return is the One who raises what has been buried, restores what has been broken, and breathes life into what seemed lost.

As the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, we must hear the urgency of this moment. Easter is not something we celebrate; it is something we embody. If we have turned toward God, we are now called to live as resurrection people—shaped by prayer, marked by reconciliation, committed to justice, and willing to bear the cost of love in a hurting world.

The empty tomb is not the end of our journey—it is our commissioning!

The risen Christ sends us out as witnesses into our congregations, communities, state, and the world. We are sent to proclaim, not only with our words but also with our lives, that new life is possible, hope is alive, and God continues to work among us.

And so I ask us, as one body in Christ: Will we stop searching among the dead and continue turning toward life, not only in this season, but in all the days ahead?

Beloved, the good news of Easter is this: Christ is Risen! Hope is alive! And God is not finished with us yet!

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

Turning Toward New Life - Together: The Road Through Holy Week

Holy Week does not invite us to observe from a distance—it calls us to walk the road with Jesus, together.

It starts with a celebration.

On Palm Sunday, crowds gather, waving branches and shouting “Hosanna!” They desire deliverance, change, and life. But even in their praise, they misunderstand what that life will look like. Jesus enters not with force but with humility. Not to conquer but to surrender. We are already being asked: will we follow Jesus on his terms—or only when the path looks triumphant?

As the week goes on, the tone shifts.

At the table on Maundy Thursday, Jesus kneels to wash feet. The Teacher becomes the servant. Bread is broken. A cup is shared. And a new commandment is given: love one another as I have loved you. This is not sentimental love—it is embodied, sacrificial, and deeply communal. In a fractured world, where division easily occurs, this moment calls the Church to turn again—toward one another, not out of convenience, but in covenant.

Then, comes Good Friday.

The cheers fade, and the crowds thin as the forces of fear, violence, and injustice seem to triumph. The cross remains a powerful reminder of the cost of faithful love. Here is the prophetic truth we cannot ignore: the world pushes back against the kind of life Jesus offers. And yet, Jesus does not turn away.

Neither should we.

To walk through Holy Week means confronting both the world's brokenness and our own inner brokenness. It involves seeing clearly what sin causes—and what love is willing to endure. Still, even here, we are not abandoned. The cross is not the end of the story, but the deepest revelation of God’s love.

This is why we walk this road together. Because alone, we may turn away. But together, we are reminded to stay, to watch, to pray, and to trust.

As we journey from palm branches to basin and towel, to cross and silence, the question remains before us: Will we turn toward life—together, even when the path leads through surrender?

Stay on the road. Life is nearer than we think.

Closing Prayer

Gracious and faithful God, as we walk this holy road with Jesus,
keep us from turning away when the journey becomes difficult.

Grant us courage to follow, humility to serve, and love that endures.

Where we are divided, unite us.

Where we are afraid, make us faithful.

Where we are tired, renew our hope.

Lead us through the shadow of the cross and hold us together in your grace.
Help us see the fullness of the new life you are bringing.

Walking Worthy: ABCNJ Church Leadership Spring Training Equips and Unites Leaders

The ABCNJ Church Leadership Spring Training gathered 110 leaders from across the region, representing 7 ABCNJ Associations (Capital, Essex, Greater Delaware Valley, North New Jersey, North Shore, Raritan, Watchung) and over 30 churches. The day focused on learning, encouragement, and spiritual renewal. Leaders came together with a shared goal: to deepen their calling and strengthen the ministries they serve.

The day started with worship as Rev. Jesse Nietzer of First Baptist, South Plainfield, and Rev. Nicholas Johnson of First Baptist Peddie Memorial, Newark, led participants in a time of praise that focused hearts and opened space for God’s presence. Through song and the opening prayer by Rev. Eric Hoheisel, the room was united in spirit, setting the tone for everything that followed.

The Rev. Dr. Miriam Méndez opened the gathering with a powerful and grounding message called “Walking Worthy: Guarding the Unity Together,” based on Ephesians 4:1–3. Her message reminded leaders that before focusing on strategy, structure, or service, there needs to be spiritual alignment. With clarity and conviction, she urged leaders to walk worthy of their calling through humility, gentleness, patience, and love—making every effort to preserve the unity of the Spirit. This message laid the spiritual foundation for the entire day, shaping not only what leaders would learn but also how they would engage one another.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a variety of learning sessions led by a gifted team of presenters, including Rev. Dr. James Jackson, Rev. Dr. Michael Wilkerson Leach, Dr. Laura Miraz, Minister Ron Dukes, and Rev. Dr. Miriam Méndez, who offered practical topics, actionable tools, and thoughtful guidance for today’s church challenges. Each session aimed to prepare leaders for faithful and effective service, enhance leadership skills, support healthy church administration, and foster strong ministry partnerships. The training combined theological principles with real-world applications, empowering leaders to return to their churches with renewed clarity and confidence.

Additionally, Judson Press was present throughout the day, providing a selection of books and resources related to the workshop topics, further equipping leaders with tools to continue learning and strengthen their ministries beyond the training.

Special thanks to Ashley Suazo, Rev. Vivian Thomas McClain, and Rev. April Van Ness for their outstanding hospitality and leadership. Their careful attention to detail in managing registration and guiding participants throughout the day helped create a warm, organized, and welcoming experience for all.

The training finished not with a final session indoors but with a prayer walk through the surrounding community. Leaders stepped outside together, moving through the neighborhood with a quiet spirit of attentiveness and intercession. As they walked, prayers were lifted up for homes, families, schools, churches, and the larger community.

There was a sacred stillness in the movement—leaders walking side by side, listening for the Spirit’s whispers, allowing God to open their eyes to the needs and opportunities around them. In that shared silence and prayer, hearts were aligned, not only with each other, but with God’s purpose for the community. It was a powerful reminder that leadership extends beyond the church walls—it reaches into the streets, into people's lives, and into the places where God is already active.

The ABCNJ Church Leadership Spring Training was more than just a day of workshops—it was a day of formation, connection, and renewal. Leaders left inspired, prepared, and united—ready to walk worthy of the calling they’ve received.

Against All Odds: Global Servants Share a Powerful Afternoon of Testimony and Mission at ABCNJ

On Tuesday, March 10th, the ABCNJ Mission Center became a place of deep reflection, fellowship, and renewed commitment to global mission. The ABCNJ team and local ABCNJ pastors gathered for lunch and conversation with Global Servants from International Ministries—Hermelinda (Mel) and Jorge Damasceno—along with Rev. Reid Trulson, Executive Director/CEO Emeritus of American Baptist International Ministries.

The gathering began with a shared meal, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the afternoon. Around each table, conversations flowed easily as participants reflected on ministry and prepared their hearts for what would become a deeply moving experience. The sense of unity in the room was unmistakable, rooted in a shared commitment to advancing God’s Kingdom.

Jorge Damasceno opened the presentation with a compelling account of his early missionary work in Albania. Arriving in a nation emerging from decades of communist rule, where Christianity had been heavily suppressed, Jorge stepped forward in faith despite immense uncertainty. He did not know the language, had no established connections, and lacked a clear plan—yet he trusted God’s call. Through perseverance and prayer, what began as a seemingly impossible mission grew into a vibrant Christian movement. Today, that once-hidden faith community includes multiple churches and tens of thousands of believers, many of whom are now leaders shaped by those early efforts.

Mel and Jorge then shared about their current ministry in the East Anglia region of the United Kingdom. There, they serve Portuguese-speaking migrant workers, a population often overlooked and underserved. By partnering with local Baptist churches, they help create welcoming environments where migrants experience dignity, support, and spiritual growth. Their work not only addresses practical needs but also fosters belonging and transformation. Additionally, they are building a network among hundreds of Portuguese-speaking communities, equipping leaders and preparing future missionaries for cross-cultural service.

Their ministry extends even further through a global partnership that includes work in Tanzania. Through Health Amplifier, an initiative focused on providing accessible healthcare in remote areas, they are bringing tangible hope to vulnerable communities. This effort reflects their commitment to holistic mission—addressing both spiritual and physical needs.

As the event concluded, the Damascenos invited churches to join them in prayer and support. They shared stories of God’s faithfulness over 30 years—how He provided meals and medical care when needed. Their testimony reminded everyone that God sustains His servants through the generosity of believers and prayers committed to the Kingdom. The gathering ended with a prayer led by Rev. Dr. Miriam Méndez, during which leaders laid hands on Jorge and Mel, asking for God’s continued guidance, protection, and provision in their mission.

Turning Toward New Life

Lent is a sacred season of reflection, repentance, and renewal. It invites us to pause and turn our hearts back to God. Often, we focus on what we must leave behind—our sins, failures, and spiritual dryness. Yet Lent also calls us to look forward with hope. Even in the midst of struggle, God is already at work bringing forth new life.

In Ezekiel 37:1–14, the prophet is brought into a valley full of dry bones. The scene represents a people who have lost hope, believing their future is gone. God asks Ezekiel a powerful question: “Son of man, can these bones live?” Humanly, the answer seems clear—dry bones cannot come back to life. But God commands Ezekiel to prophesy, and as he does, something remarkable happens. The bones come together, flesh appears, and breath enters. What was once lifeless becomes a living army.

This vision reminds us that God specializes in restoring what appears dead. Situations that seem beyond repair—relationships, dreams, ministries, or even our own faith—are not beyond God’s power. When God breathes His Spirit, life begins again.

Jesus also speaks about this mystery of new life in John 12:24. He says, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” These words point toward the cross, but they also reveal a spiritual principle. Sometimes God brings new life through surrender, sacrifice, and letting go. What seems like an ending might actually be the start of something bigger.

During Lent, we are invited to ask ourselves an important question: What new life is God already bringing forth? Perhaps God is renewing your faith after a season of doubt. Perhaps God is rebuilding hope where disappointment once lived. Maybe God is planting new vision for your family, your church, or your calling.

The process of new life is often quiet and gradual, like a seed growing underground before anyone sees the first green shoot. Yet God is always working beneath the surface. The resurrection we celebrate at Easter is not sudden or accidental—it is the culmination of God’s faithful work through suffering, waiting, and trust.

As we journey through Lent, let us open our hearts to God’s transforming power. Let us listen for His voice, breathe in His Spirit, and trust that even in dry places, He is preparing something new. For the God who raised dry bones and brought life through the cross is still bringing forth new life today.

Turning Toward Justice Through Compassion and Faithful Action

As we enter the Lenten season, a time for reflection, repentance, and preparation for Easter, we are called to deepen our understanding of compassion, mercy, and social holiness. The scriptures from Isaiah 58:6-10 and Micah 6:8 invite us to consider how genuine repentance transforms our actions and attitudes toward others.

Isaiah 58:6 challenges us to move beyond mere rituals of fasting and religious observance. The prophet calls us to act with justice and compassion. "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?” This passage reminds us that true worship is characterized by our actions toward those in need. It urges us to examine our hearts and ask ourselves: Are we merely going through the motions, or are we actively pursuing justice?

Similarly, Micah 6:8 distills the essence of what God requires of us: "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." This verse encapsulates the intersection of justice and compassion, demonstrating that our faith must translate into tangible actions that uplift the marginalized and empower the downtrodden. It emphasizes that our repentance must lead to changes in our everyday interactions, prompting us to treat others with dignity and respect.

A critical question arises: How does repentance change how we treat others? Genuine repentance opens our eyes to the injustices around us and compels us to act with compassion. When we acknowledge our shortcomings and seek forgiveness, we become more aware of the needs of those around us who are suffering. This awareness moves us beyond indifference to a place where we can extend mercy and engage in faithful action.

During Lent, let us reflect on how we can cultivate a spirit of compassion and mercy in our lives. This season offers us an opportunity to seek forgiveness and commit to acts of justice. By turning our hearts toward the needs of others, we create a community rooted in social holiness, demonstrating that our faith is alive and active.

In embracing acts of compassion and justice, we fulfill the call of our faith and ultimately reflect the love and mercy of God to the world around us.

Let us take this Lenten journey together, empowering one another to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.

Prayer:

Merciful God, you call us not only to repentance but to lives shaped by justice and compassion.

Open our eyes to the needs around us and soften our hearts toward those who suffer.

Give us courage to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with you, so that our faith may bring light, hope, and freedom to others.

Turning Toward One Another

Thanks to the proliferation of online platforms, I can chat with a group of my former high school classmates from 60 years ago on a social network. We have reconnected, despite the distance, turning back to one another.

Sure, those are my lifelong friends, but we live in a world full of people. While there is still room on the planet for more, sometimes it seems there are already too many of us. However, there are moments when we feel so alone that it seems no one sees us, no one even notices our existence, and they ignore us as if we weren't there. Indeed, this commonly happens in emergencies when we need immediate attention.

God created us with a sense of community that compels us to turn toward one another, but today there is a strong push toward extreme independence, making it difficult to look at one another with patience and understanding. This is why our emotions and reasoning often lack the will to forgive and reconcile, because individual preferences and predilections divide and isolate us.

Jesus told the parable of the ‘two debtors’ to teach us that forgiveness and reconciliation are God's purpose for our lives and the rule by which He deals with us. In this way, He warns us to learn to get along with one another in genuine mutual consideration. Paul later affirms that this task of reconciliation is the complete work of Jesus Christ, and that it is the ministry of the new life He entrusts to us in His Word.

A principle like this could be easy to apply in our relationships with fellow church members, our family, and people of our same background. But we must consider what will happen when we have to turn to others with whom we don't share much in common. Here, we face a real challenge in our communities to care for each other as Jesus did.

In this Lenten season, today's journey invites us to consider this key question: Who is God calling us to see or love differently?

Prayer:

Reconciling God, you have turned toward us in mercy through Jesus Christ.

Open our eyes to see those we overlook.

Soften our hearts to forgive as we have been forgiven.

Teach us to turn toward one another with patience, compassion, and love.

Amen.

Important Update on Immigration Enforcement and Houses of Worship

Dear ABCNJ Pastors and Church Leaders,

We are sharing an important update from the Office of the General Secretary of ABCUSA.

ABCUSA joined other churches and denominations in legal action following the removal of long-standing protections for sensitive locations such as houses of worship. A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction restricting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from conducting enforcement actions inside churches and within 100 feet of church property, including parking lots, or from targeting individuals traveling to worship.

This is encouraging news for congregations serving communities experiencing fear and uncertainty.

However, this protection is not yet in effect. Additional legal steps remain, and we will provide updates as they become available.

In the meantime, we encourage our congregations to consider displaying the ABCUSA logo as a visible sign of connection and shared witness.

Please continue to pray for wisdom, courage, and faithfulness as we seek to remain places of refuge, worship, and hope.

Turning Toward God through Prayer and Trust

“O God, you are my God; I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your name.” (Psalm 63:1-4)

Such comfort many of us have! Flick a switch, and there is light. Push a button, and we have the Winter Olympics from Europe beamed into our living room with all its color and grandeur. Pull an entrée from the freezer, pop it in the oven, and a delectably delicious dinner is served in thirty minutes. We usually pause to give thanks to the Sustainer of Life, or maybe not. God knows I am grateful.

On Sunday night, while we slept, a blizzard swept ashore in our seaside town. When we awoke, none of what I described was possible except to give thanks. The electricity was out. The oven wasn’t working. The TV screen was dark. The house was getting chilly as the outside temperature hovered around freezing, and snow continued to fall. The car was snowed in, and digging it out would have taken hours. Thank God, literally, thank God for the gas range in our kitchen. We had running water and five burners to keep our house warm at 55 degrees. Blankets, candles, cell service, and prevailing prayer.

O God, you are my God; I seek you. My soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a [cold] and [snowy] land where there is [is scarce heat]. I had planned to approach this devotion from a different angle. A dear friend of mine has lost her vision because of an eye disease, and I am trusting God with her future even as we walk through this difficult season.

But today God has our attention in another way. This, perhaps, is the fast God will use in this Lenten journey—a turning toward Him in the midst of what is missing. I invite you to turn toward God with us, bringing before Him whatever feels absent or broken in your own life. God knows how all of this will unfold, even as I dream of warmer days when the heater works, the lights shine again, and my friend’s vision is restored. “Faith is the evidence of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Thanks be to God. Where have we relied on ourselves instead of God?

Prayer:

Faithful God, we confess how often we rely on ourselves instead of on you.

When life feels secure, we trust our own strength;

When it feels uncertain, we try to control what we cannot.

Forgive us.

Turn our hearts back to you.

In what is missing, in what is broken, teach us to seek you and to trust you.

Grow in us a faith that rests not in what we see, but in who you are.

Amen.

Turning Toward Life: Beginning Again

Lent begins with an honest truth spoken over us: we are dust, and to dust we shall return. Ash Wednesday does not ease us into the season—it grounds us in reality. It names our mortality, our limits, and our deep need for God. And yet, even here, at the very beginning of this holy season, God’s invitation is not one of condemnation, but of grace.

Through the prophet Joel, God does not shout condemnation but issues a summons: “Return to me with all your heart… for I am gracious and merciful” (Joel 2:12–13). Repentance is not humiliation; it is an invitation. It is the courageous act of turning away from what numbs, divides, and diminishes life, and turning toward the God who restores it. To repent is to begin again—honestly, humbly, and together.

This season will guide us through a series of intentional turns. We will turn toward God in prayer, learning again what it means to trust and depend on God rather than our own strength. We will turn toward one another, allowing reconciliation, forgiveness, and community to reshape how we see and love our neighbors. We will turn toward justice, discovering how repentance reaches beyond our hearts and into our actions in the world. We will turn toward the cross, where sacrificial love reveals the true cost—and promise—of discipleship. And finally, we will turn toward new life, trusting that God can bring hope and resurrection even where all seems dry or lost.

But the journey does not begin with all of that at once. It begins here.

Ash Wednesday calls us to stop pretending and to tell the truth about our lives, our churches, and our world. Psalm 51 gives us the language: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” Not repair what is convenient. Not improve what is comfortable. Create—something new, something only God can do.

As ashes mark our foreheads, we are reminded that God is not finished with us. Lent begins not in despair but in hope—the hope that turning is possible, that grace is real, and that new beginnings are always within reach.

As we begin this Lenten journey, the question before us is simple but not easy: What needs to be turned over to God as we begin again? May we answer with honesty, humility, and trust—believing that every turning toward God is a turning toward life.

Prayer
God of grace, we confess that we have turned away—

from you, from one another, and from the life you desire for us.

We have clung to what is familiar rather than what is faithful.
Create in us clean hearts, O God.
Teach us that repentance is not shame but the doorway to renewal.
As we begin this Lenten journey, turn us again toward life.

A Pastoral Call to Love, Truth and Justice

Dear Pastors, Leaders, and Congregations of ABCNJ,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I write with a heavy heart and a spirit of prayerful urgency. Recent events in Minneapolis, Minnesota, have shaken our nation and weighed deeply on our consciences. In separate fatal encounters involving federal immigration enforcement agents, two lives—Alex Pretti and Renée Nicole Good—have been lost amid an escalation of ICE and DHS actions. Their deaths have sparked grief, protest, and searching questions about justice, human dignity, and our responsibilities as followers of Jesus Christ.

These are not distant headlines or abstract debates. They are human lives, created in the image of God. They are families grieving, communities destabilized, and congregations asking how violence has become entangled with public policy and enforcement. Such moments demand more than commentary. They call those entrusted with spiritual leadership to discern who we are called to be in Christ and how we will bear faithful witness in a wounded world.

Our faith compels us to examine not only the actions taken, but the moral vision guiding them. As people of faith, we must speak with humility and courage: followers of Jesus Christ are called to a way of life rooted in justice, mercy, and reverence for human dignity. When the exercise of power contradicts these commitments, we cannot remain silent or offer our consent. Faithfulness requires that we seek truth, stand with those who are harmed, and call for practices that reflect the reconciling love and justice of Christ.

Scripture makes God’s concern for justice unmistakably clear: “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” (Isaiah 1:17) Jesus himself teaches that our treatment of the stranger, the suffering, and the threatened is inseparable from our relationship with him: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me… whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me” (Matthew 25:35, 40). These words leave no room for indifference or for spiritualizing away injustice. They call us to costly solidarity and faithful action.

This moment is a moral crisis that transcends political categories. At stake are the sanctity of human life, the protection of the vulnerable, and the credibility of our Christian witness. The question before us is whether our churches will raise a prophetic voice—calling for accountability, truth, compassion, and justice—or retreat into silence when that voice is most needed.

We are not called to demonize individuals, but neither are we permitted to ignore or excuse systems and actions that devalue human life. We are called not only to comfort the afflicted, but to challenge the misuse of power when it results in suffering and death. We are called to speak the truth in love, trusting that God’s justice and mercy belong together.

Therefore, I urge pastors, leaders, and congregations across ABCNJ to:

Offer pastoral care to those who are grieving and fearful, creating space for lament, prayer, and honest conversation.
Pray earnestly for the families of Alex Pretti and Renée Good, for communities traumatized by violence, and for all who labor for justice and peace.
Raise a prophetic witness that calls for transparency, accountability, and meaningful reform in immigration enforcement, grounded in respect for the dignity of every human being.
Call upon elected officials to act with urgency, moral clarity, and courage to prevent further loss of life.
Encourage congregations to engage faithfully—holding together compassion for immigrants, respect for the rule of law, and an unwavering commitment to protecting human life.
Remind our communities that Christian love is not passive; it speaks, stands, and acts for the vulnerable, seeking peace rooted in justice.

The Christian calling has never been easy. It is costly. It calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, even when doing so exposes painful truths about power and brokenness in our society. Yet this is the path Christ sets before us.

In this challenging hour, may our voices—anchored in Scripture and shaped by the life of Jesus—resound with compassion, clarity, and courage. May we be known not for silence in the face of suffering, but for a faith that acts, a hope that heals, and a love that transforms. May our love not grow cold in the face of increasing wickedness.

Celebrating Together at the 55th Annual Session of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey

With over 300 individuals registered, the 55th Annual Session of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey proved to be a Christ-centered, spirit-filled celebration.

Leading up to the Saturday gathering, a series of three webinars was held throughout the week. These sessions aimed to spiritually and intellectually prepare attendees, covering important topics such as aligning with God's mission rather than personal ambition, fostering unity in Christ amid diversity, and addressing contemporary parenting challenges from a faith-based perspective.

Special thanks to MMBB and Sovereign Insurance for co-sponsoring this year’s Annual Session. Their support, along with the generosity and tireless efforts of ABCNJ leaders, was vital in making the event a success.

Together in God’s Work

Under the theme "Together in God’s Work," Rev. Miriam Mendez, Executive Minister and Senior Region Pastor, warmly welcomed attendees and encouraged them to open their hearts to the Spirit as the liturgical dancers, led by Rev. Dr. Malachy Williams, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church Cranford/Elizabeth, performed the opening worship dance. Their performance filled the gathering with the breath of the Spirit.

Every part of the Annual Session was filled with a spirit of worship and gratitude for God's work in the past, present, and future through ABCNJ.

This year’s gathering featured the ABCNJ Choir, led by Damaris Figueredo from the Iglesia Bautista Hispano Americana in Elizabeth, bringing the theme song “The Church” to life. The choir, made up of members from Memorial Baptist Church, The Cathedral Church, and Iglesia Bautista Hispano Americana, was supported by talented guest musicians such as pianist David Caldwell Mason and violinist Peter Pezzino, along with drummer Leonardo Lazo and guitarist Norberto Ross from Iglesia Bautista Hispano Americana. Additionally, women from the Haitian Baptist Church at the Crossroads performed a melodic song written for the occasion.

A notable first for this year was the Emerging Scholar Graduate Panel, featuring recent graduates Emely Maradiaga (First Baptist Church, New Brunswick), Lionel Quaynor (NextGen Church) and Rev. Damion Parron (Shiloh Baptist Church, Trenton). Facilitated by Rev. Dr. Christopher Jones, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, Hillside, the panel highlighted the fresh insights of emerging leaders within our faith community.

Mission partners received a “Together in God’s Work” certificate to recognize their invaluable contributions. Additionally, the top 20 mission-giving ABCNJ churches were awarded certificates of appreciation for their generosity and commitment.

Rev. Miriam Méndez delivered a powerful, Spirit-filled message rooted in 1 Corinthians 3, posing the urgent question, "Are we working together in God’s work?" Her call to action was clear: "We can’t harvest together if we don’t plant together. Our mission transcends building individual ministries; it’s about uniting in God’s purpose.” She reminded us that our identity is more than just a region — we are a movement, a covenant people bound by the Spirit and tasked with a mission larger than ourselves. Rev. Mendez challenged us to embrace our identity as a "Spirit-filled, Scripture-rooted, justice-pursuing, Christ-centered, multiethnic family of churches.” We are not meant to survive culture; we are meant to transform it!

This Annual Session was more than just a gathering—it was a strong affirmation of faith, unity, and our shared journey in God’s work.

The Significance of Transitional Ministries and Support for Interim Ministers

A pastor's departure or retirement, whether they've served a congregation for a short or long time, marks an important season in the life of a church. During this period, the church goes through a transitional phase between the departure of the pastor and the arrival of a new one. This in-between stage is vital for the congregation's future and should be approached with discernment and care.

The Role of Interim Ministry

Interim ministry plays an essential role in guiding congregations through this pivotal period. As churches look to discern their next steps, it is important not to rush the search for a new pastor. Rushing to find a replacement can deprive the church of the opportunity to reflect on its recent past, evaluate its history, and discern God’s will for its present and future ministry.

Through prayerful discernment and careful reflection during the interim period, a congregation can better prepare for the new ministry that God is preparing for them. Scripture highlights the importance of such in-between moments: God speaks and shapes communities for the future, even during times of transition. As the prophet Isaiah reminds us, “Behold, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:19).

Support and Learning Opportunities for Interim Ministers

One of the key benefits of participating in the search process with the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey (ABCNJ) is the support and guidance offered to Interim Pastors. Through regular evaluations by the congregations they serve, along with learning opportunities through gatherings with other interim ministers, Interim Pastors are better equipped to lead churches through this transitional time.

In addition to the valuable evaluation and feedback process, Interim Pastors benefit from regular interactions with the ABCNJ staff, who offer ongoing support, mentorship, and guidance. These resources ensure that Interim Pastors are not only capable of meeting the current needs of the congregation but are also prepared to lead churches into the future.

Fostering Growth and Collaboration through Cohort Ministries

A key aspect of supporting Interim Ministers is the ABCNJ Transitional & Interim Ministries Cohort. Now in their third successful cohort session, it provides a space for interim leaders to gather for comprehensive training, ongoing education, and networking.

Held every four months, these sessions offer Interim, Intentional Interim, and Transitional Pastors, along with retired pastors and experienced ministers, valuable opportunities for both professional and personal growth. The gatherings occur at the ABCNJ Center in Westfield, NJ, a welcoming and resource-rich environment that fosters learning and collaboration.

Facilitated by Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor, Rev. Miriam Méndez and the newly appointed Transitional Ministry Specialist, Rev. Dr. James Jackson, these cohort meetings create a supportive community for interim leaders. Together, they have worked diligently to create a curriculum that meets the specific needs of interim pastors, ensuring that participants leave with enhanced skills, renewed inspiration, and a deeper connection to their peers in ministry.

A Vision for the Future

Through these support systems and learning opportunities, the ABCNJ Transitional Ministry program aims to prepare congregations for the new ministries God will bring. As we reflect on the importance of transitional times in Scripture, we recognize that these periods of change are opportunities for renewal and growth. The work of Interim Ministers, supported by ongoing education and community-building, ensures that churches are ready for the exciting new things God is doing in their midst.
