ImageProfile: The Rev. Dr. Glenn Eugene Porter is associate regional pastor/area minister for American Baptist Churches of New Jersey. He is responsible for ministering to approximately 120 congregations and pastors in Essex and North New Jersey associations.

Dr. Porter’s professional experience is diverse, including pastor, college professor, prison chaplain, and broadcast and print journalist. In addition to his responsibilities at ABCNJ, Dr. Porter teaches in the Eastern School of Christian Ministry program, sponsored by Palmer Theological Seminary, and serves as the Region’s liaison to the area seminaries.

Prior to joining the ABCNJ ministry team, Dr. Porter served as pastor at the historic Gillfield Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia. Gillfield is one of the oldest, established African American Baptist churches in America, organized in 1797. Porter chronicles the rich history of the church in his new book, Facing the Rising Sun. The book includes a foreword by the Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, pastor emeritus of Canaan Baptist Church of Harlem, New York.

Rev. Porter earned the Doctor of Ministry and Master of Divinity degrees at the Samuel D. Proctor School of Theology, Virginia Union University in 2001 and 1989, respectively.

While in Virginia, Porter was elected president of the Division of Clergy of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia.

Dr. Porter also holds a BA in mass communications/journalism from Rowan University; in 2000, he received his alma mater’s prestigious President’s Award for outstanding service to academia and humanity.

The youngest of four sons born to Bernard and Marjorie Porter, Dr. Porter is married to the former Lisa Parker of South Richmond, and they are the proud parents of three sons: Glenn Jr., 10; Luke Proctor, 8, and Adam DeWitt, 5.

He has served as pastor at two churches: Mount Zion Baptist Church, Staunton, VA and historic Gillfield Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA. Dr. Porter chronicles the rich history of Gillfield in his new book, Facing the Rising Sun. The book includes a foreword by the Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, pastor emeritus of Canaan Baptist Church of Harlem, New York. Dr. Walker served as pastor at Gillfield during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
