Two candidates pursuing ABC recognized ordination shared their testimonies at the June 14, 2007 meeting of the ABCNJ Committee on Professional Ministry and Church Relations. Sheila R. Burns-Owens from First Baptist Church in Teaneck (Rev. Marilyn Monroe Harris, Senior Pastor) and Martha J. Bevacqua from Osbornville Baptist Church (Rev. Jeffery L. Conley, Senior Pastor) spoke about how they became Christians, the circumstances surrounding their call to ministry, their ministerial experience, and their anticipation of vocational service. With the approval of the committee, both candidates will now work with their respective associations (North New Jersey and North Shore) as they complete their ordination papers in anticipation of their Ordination Councils. The American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware has graciously invited ABCNJ to co-sponsor their upcoming Clergy Ethics Course, which will be held on June 15-16, 2007 at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Although the deadline for registering for this date has passed, we still felt it was important for the region to be reminded of its occurence (e-mail announcements were sent to everyone on our e-mail list in early April). We plan to sponsor additional dates in the future with ABCOPAD. This course fulfills the ethics standard for the odination process, and is also available for continuing education credit for those who are already ordained. |

The ABCNJ Committee on Professional Ministry and Church Relations will be sharing a dinner with the Executive Committees of the 8 ABCNJ Associations on May 14, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. at the Region Office in Hamilton Square. The focus of the discussion will be on the ABCNJ Ordination process. We will clarify the relationship between the various steps in the process (local church endorsement of the candidate, regional approval, associational approval, and subsequent ordination service in the local church). We will also compare the differing ways in which each association fulfills its part of the process. |
