The ABCNJ Committee on Professional Ministry and Church Relations meets 5 to 6 times a year at the regional office. The major responsibility of the Committee is to meet with candidates seeking ABCNJ recognized ordination. On June 14, 2007, the Committee held its regularly scheduled meeting. Visit the Committee's "Events" blog to read a summary of the meeting. But I thought you'd might like to meet the members of the committee. Pictured (from left to right) are Rev. Michael Mazer, Rev. Mary Lovett, Rev. Leora Liggins, Rev. Kathleen Tice, Mrs. Janna Best, Rev. Joe Mathis, Rev. David Spiegel, and Rev. Richard Sharber. Not pictiured are Mr. Dieuner Joseph, who was not at the June meeting, and Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, who serves as chairperson of the committee and was behind the camera lens!

On May 14, 2007, members of the ABCNJ Ministry Team and Committee on Professional Ministries and Church Relations met with Executive Committee members of all 8 Associations, for an evening of dinner and conversation regarding the Ordination Process. About 25 people participated. The majority of time was spent clarifying the roles of each partner in the Ordination Process: the candidate, the local church, the regional Professional Ministries Committee, the regional ministry team, and the Associations and the Ordination Council. There was a clear consensus that the local church needs to be better informed of its responsibility to license only those candidates they truly believe are called by God to be ordained. We also clarifed the different roles the Professional Ministries Committee and the Associations play. The Professional Ministries Committee is charged with determining that each candidate has met the spiritual, educational, psychological and professional standards (as outlined in the Ordination Standards). The spiritual component relates to the candidate's ability to articulate a conversion to Christ, commitment to an ABCNJ church (membership) and general sense of call to ministry (since often candidates do not have an actual call to a specific vocational ministry when they meet the Committee). |
