Members of the Pearl Street Baptist Church in Bridgeton (left) and the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmar (below) rushed through the Scriptures this week!
Each requested Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, ABCNJ's Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor, to provide an overview of the Scriptures based on Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover. He drove them through the Scriptures based on 3 responses to the question: "What does the Bible say about Jesus and his Messianic journey?"
Dr. Spitzer shared that we can scour the Bible looking for Messianic prophecies and their fulfillments - the prophecy coupon clipping approach.
Second, we can search the Bible for Messianic themes or threads. The loss of eternal life, the need for redemption, and the suffering servant motif are examples of this approach.
Or, third, we can read the Bible seeking for the 5 great journeys of Jesus (if you don't know what they are, invite Dr. Spitzer to your church and he'll reveal them!).
Pearl Street Baptist Church has been studying Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover as an adult Sunday School elective.
Calvary Belmar gathered for Ash Wednesday and the overview message took place during the service. Before that, everyone enjoyed a delicious home-made soup dinner. The highlight for Dr. Spitzer - Italian wedding soup!

As we enter into 2008, churches across the region are either continuing or starting Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover series!
At Columbus Baptist Church, Pastors John Grove and and Clyde Van Worth invited Dr. Lee Spitzer, ABCNJ Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor, to lead the JCCC module on the Jewish Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel). About 50 members turned out this past Wednesday night! Last year, the church hosted the Gospels Module, and offered Revelation as a bonus session! For the second year in a row, the First Baptist Church of Vincentown (below) hosted a January Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover Retreat. In 2007, they covered the Torah. This year, Dr. Spitzer covered the closing books of the New Testament: James, 1 & 2 Peter, 1,2,3 John, Jude, and Revelation.

On Wednesday night, December 12, 2007, I traveled south to teach the Gospel of John at Berean Baptist Church in Bridgeton. Rev. Donald Harrington is the pastor of the church.
Luke praises the church in Berea for receiving Paul's message about Jesus "with great eagerness and [they] examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true" (Acts 17:11). In like manner, I would like to applaud the members of ABCNJ's Berean Church in Bridgeton for completing the Old Testament part of the Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover study. They have also now completed the Gospels module. That is fantastic! Pastor Harrington showed me his teacher's notebook that he uses each week as he studies the Bible based on Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover. He photocopies each page of the text to make it larger and underlines key concepts. Then he appends his own insights and thoughts, in preparation for sharing with his members. |

About twenty members of First Baptist Church in Long Branch gathered on Wednesday night, October 10, 2007 to study the book of Revelation with ABCNJ's Executive Minister and Senior Regional Pastor, Rev. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer. The church has covered about one-third of the Old Testament as part of their Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover Bible Study series, but decided to skip to the final book of the New Testament for this special evening. "Put away your time-lines," Dr. Spitzer declared at the opening of the study, "and discover the Christ-centered message of John's book. You'll find a picture of Jesus as the Lord not only of the church, but of all of history." Special thanks to Rev. Ron Paige, pastor of FBC Long Branch, for organizing the evening! |

I had the opportunity to return to the Baptist Home of South Jersey (Riverview Estates) on Wednesday, July 11. Members of the Mission Group invited me to share about Jesus Christ from Cover to Cover. They began their study under the guidance of Rev. Doug Hargis, Chaplain, earlier this year, and have made tremendous porogress. By studying a book a week, they have now passed the Psalms!
I was personally very encouraged by the excitement and dedication these women have brought to their study of the Messianic message of the Bible. They continue to serve as role models to the rest of the region! |
