October 11, 2008 The 2008 Annual One in Christ Symposium "In Him All Things Hold Together: A Regional Conversation on Race Relations" "Christ is Supreme!" "He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the first born from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. " Colossians 1:17-20 Rev. Dr. Leonard Thompson - Plenary Speaker Please set aside this special day on your church calendars as we come together once again to celebrate our annual One in Christ Symposium. We are blessed to have lead us on this day, the Rev. Dr. Leonard Thompson, executive minister of the Cleveland Baptist Association. We will also have a panel of speakers who will present case studies and engage us in one on one conversation regarding this vital issue in our lives as people of God. Together, we will share our wisdom with one another and envision fresh and practical pastoral approaches to guide our practice within our individual ministry contexts. The event will begin at 9 AM, with registration and fellowship, and we will adjourn at 3:00 PM. Lunch will be served. The venue for the event is being finalized and will be announced soon. Please stay tuned for further details. But for now, we need your help to spread the word, and in preparing your church members and leaders - especially your mission committees - to participate enthusiastically. Your voice and presence are essential to the witness of our regional life. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AND YOUR CHURCH MEMBERS ON OCTOBER 11, 2008! |

Filipino Baptists and ABCUSA Partner Institutions Suffer Catastrophic Damage During these last few months we have been made aware of the suffering of countless many from natural disasters that have been visited upon peoples in different parts of the world. The deluge in Myanmar, the earthquakes in China and Japan, and more recently the misery that the flooded Mississippi RIver cast all along its path in the American midwest. The phrase, "Compassion Fatigue" may start coming up again through the media. Perhaps the fact that we see and hear so little from the media anymore about these disasters, and the countless lives they have shattered forever, is a sign of such psychic "fatigue"; or perhaps the relative silence is only a merciful but ironic solace that is given to the compassionate who has to grieve from a distance. | | Aerial photo shows vast floodwaters engulfing farmlands and residential areas in Pavia , Iloilo . But when suffering comes so close to home, the reality of that suffering is never far from the cares of our hearts and minds; and its pain knows no fatigue. |

| Dear Clergy Colleague and Church Leaders:
God's peace be with you this day! |
| "Let me hear in the morning of thy steadfast love, for in thee I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go, for to thee I lift up my soul; every day I will bless thee, and praise thy name for ever and ever!" Psalm 142:8; 145:2-3

GRACE BAPTIST AND PERFECTING SAINTS CHURCH IN TRENTON I had the privilege again to be with Grace Baptist and Perfecting Saints Church in Trenton this past Palm Sunday, this time to give a pastoral encouragement to the staff and the members of the church as they continue in a vitally important journey for their future. Grace Baptist Church and Perfecting Saints Youth Group. Rev. Evans is standing on the left. Several years ago the pastor of Perfecting Saints Church, the Rev. Ethan Evans, and the then pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Vaughn Foster, saw a vision for a partnership between the two congregations that they were serving. The congregation of Perfecting Saints soon joined Grace Baptist Church in their facility on Hermitage Avenue in Trenton. A new journey had begun for the two congregations. |

A Brief Reflection on the Rhythms and Cycles of Life Many (including myself!) will find it odd that I would be reflecting on a summer theme when it is almost Thanksgiving! But then it only is another indication of why I am drawing upon the notion of the rhythms and the cycles of life as I try to find some rationale (or plain excuse!) for having been rather silent for the latter part of the summer in my Blog. |
