INSTITUT MAHANAIM - GRANDE SALINE, ARTIBONITE, HAITI PDF Print E-mail

In August 2007, I went to my home town, Grande Saline, in Haiti. Some parents came to me and were concerned about the future of their children. In that town of about 2500 people there is only one public elementary school for kindergarten to 6th grade. After the 6th grade if a parent cannot afford to send his or her child to a city close by, the child will spend the rest of his or her life without a middle or a secondary education.

After a meeting with some parents and some leaders of a church in Grande Saline, I decided to open by faith a school, not knowing where the money would come from for the functioning of the school. In September 2007 the school opened. The school was so needed that the staff of the public elementary school allowed Mahanaim Institut to use their facility in the evening. Right after the school year ended in June, a disastrous storm ripped off the roof of the public school and in September 2008 there is no chance that the school will re-open.

During my last visit to Haiti July 2008, I met with the principal of the Mahanaim Institut and the Pastor of the Evangelical Church in Grande Saline. We decided to restore an old house that belonged to the Church and to add some classes to allow the school to continue its ministries. Again this was done by faith.

During the same time in Grande Saline they had an outdoor revival where I was asked to preach the last sermon of that week. On that night, during the altar call a Voodoo priest with his paramour, and his children came to the Lord.

Those children and many others need a solid Christian and academic education and the Mahanaim Institut will offer these kinds of educations to those youngsters. Due to the advanced age of some of the students, I plan to add a professional section (Sewing, Cooking and Computer) in the school to allow the youngsters to be able to help themselves after graduating from secondary school.

Presently I am working to build the classrooms and all the help I can find will be welcomed.

AMERICAN BAPTIST HOME MISSIONARY AND FORMER NATIONAL MINISTRIES STAFFER DIES PDF Print E-mail
Written by ABNS

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 04/14/08) — Rev. Dr. Julio Laporte, former national coordinator for Haitian Ministries at National Ministries, American Baptist Churches USA passed away on April 10. He was 73.

A leader among American Baptist Haitian congregations, Laporte served the Haitian American Baptist community through National Ministries from 2000 to 2003. During that time he supported Haitian churches through pastoral training and networking opportunities such as annual conventions, monthly pastoral meetings and more.

National Ministries’ Executive Director Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins III remembers Laporte as an “esteemed elder” among Haitian Baptists in the United States and Haiti. “He was an effective urban pastor,” Wright-Riggins says, “as well as a voice of advocacy for Haitians and a bridge-builder between National Ministries and the Haitian Alliance and congregations.”

Most recently Laporte served Bethel Haitian Baptist Church in East Orange, N.J., as pastor. During the 1980s and 1990s, when there was an influx of Haitian refugees in New Jersey, Laporte provided pastoral support to the resettlement effort and, in some cases, sponsored refugees in conjunction with his church.

Laporte also worked as a social worker for the Essex County Welfare Board in Newark, N.J., and as a health representative in offices of the New Jersey Health Department in Trenton and Newark. Early in his career, he pastored local churches in the Bahamas as well as Haiti.

Commissioned as an American Baptist home missionary in 2001, Laporte was ordained in American Baptist Churches USA in 1958 and held a Ph.D. in Christian education and a master’s degree in theology, both from Lighthouse Christian College in Beebe, Ariz. He also held a B.D. from Theological Baptist Seminary in Limbe, Haiti.

Laporte is survived by his widow, Rev. Dr. Anne-Rose Laporte, who currently serves Bethel Baptist Haitian Church, and six children. Prayers for the family and friends will be appreciated.

Services are scheduled at Bethel Baptist Church, 320 Springdale Ave., East Orange, N.J. 07017-4532; (973) 673-1731: the viewing on April 18, 6 – 9 p.m., and the funeral on April 19, 9 a.m.

The Volmar family
While visiting Premiere Eglise de Rockland in Nyack, New York, one of ABCNJ's newest new church development projects, I had the privilege of meeting Doctor Louis and Hugette Volmar.  Hugette is Pastor Pierre Bastien's sister.

The Volmar's daughter, Syliah, died when she was only 6 years old.  The cause of her death was dilated cardiomyapathy.  In her honor, the parents began the Syliah Volmar Foundation.  Its goal is to "provide and promotea better quality of life, a secure environment, and to guard the innocence of and afford proper social interaction to young children."

For more information about the Volmar's work, visit their web site at www.syliahvolmarfoundation.org.
